"Divorce Dress" has a singular origin: the gown was originally purchased at Fretex, a Norwegian thrift store, and underwent a remarkable transformation from an 80s design to a 50s Stepford wife aesthetic. This redesign was done by the artist herself for her own wedding, giving the dress its own life story long before Maria acquired it.
The centrepiece moment came at the Human Mannequins exhibition, where the dress, worn by a living model, was live-painted by Carolina Falkholt using spray paint. Giving the gown new life in front of a live audience transformed it from garment to artwork.
The dress represents the transition from an obedient wife to an independent woman, free to explore the world on her own terms. It is a symbol of freedom, self-determination and the courage to redefine oneself.
